Trio Tokava was formed in 2022 at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, USA. All three artists have illustrious solo and chamber music careers, and the group is dedicated to offering audiences a unique and captivating approach to the repertoire they perform. The trio recently won the 2nd Prize and Special Jury Prize at the prestigious 2023 Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition in Norway. Since then, the group’s original cellist, Eugene Lin, left and has been replaced by Liav Kerbel. The trio has worked extensively with Professors Martin Beaver, Fabio Bidini, and Clive Greensmith.
Born in Florida to Lebanese-Japanese parents, Nadia Azzi is a recipient of numerous top prizes at national and international levels, including the Beverly Hills National Auditions, National YoungArts Foundation, and Nordmann Scholarship Competition. She has received fellowships and scholarships at the Ravinia Steans Music Institute, Sarasota Music Festival, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Yellow Barn, and Aspen Music Festival. In addition, she has performed at the Newport Classical Music Festival, Bravo Niagara of the Arts, Arabs’ Got Talent, NPR’s From the Top, Radio Canada International, NHK-FM Japan, FBC Japan, Fukui TV, and WFMT Chicago. Nadia has also performed with several orchestras under distinguished conductors. She graduated from the pre-college division of The Juilliard School studying with Yoheved Kaplinsky, and received her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees at the Colburn Conservatory of Music studying with Fabio Bidini.
Malaysian violinist Zi Yang Low is one of the most compelling musicians of his generation. Recent achievements include winning the grand prize of the GSF Singapore Festival; first prizes at the Virtual International Competition Malaysia, Ipoh Music Festival, Brilliant Talent Discovery Awards International Music Competition, Malaysia Youth Music Festival Competition, EuroAsia Violin Competition, and Singapore Raffles International Music Festival. As a soloist and chamber musician, he has performed with orchestras such as the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and Selangor Philharmonic Orchestra, and has collaborated with renowned musicians and conductors including Marc Coppey, Tatjana Masurenko, Paul Watkins, and Gerard Salonga. A Kohl scholar of the Colburn Music Academy, Zi Yang is currently pursuing his Bachelor’s at the Colburn Conservatory of Music, where he studies with Martin Beaver.
Belgian-Israeli cellist, Liav Kerbel, is increasingly recognized as a versatile and dynamic musician. He is a major prize winner at several international competitions, the most recent being a 4th prize winner at the Paulo International Cello Competition in 2023. He has collaborated alongside several renowned musicians such as Maxim Vengerov with the Brahms Double Concerto and Mischa Maisky with Vivaldi’s Double Cello Concerto.
A passionate chamber musician, Liav has participated in numerous festivals including the Ravinia Steans Music Institute, Perlman Music Program, MusicAlp in France, and the Verbier Festival Academy. Liav holds a Bachelor of Music degree at the Manhattan School of Music as a student of Philippe Muller. He received his Master of Music degree at the New England Conservatory under the guidance of Laurence Lesser, and in 2023 he pursued a Post-Graduate degree from the Universität Mozarteum studying with Giovanni Gnocchi. Most recently, he graduated as an Artist Diploma student at the Barenboim-Said Akademie where he studied with Frans Helmerson.
